Broken Key Extraction

You were locking up on the way out when the key broke in the lock. Now the door is unlocked, a piece of key is jammed in the cylinder, and you were already running late for work.

In plain words

If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first. On the phone, describe the lock, whether any of the blade shows, and whether the key turned when it broke. Have photo identification to hand, or the ownership papers if it is a vehicle. That short conversation means the locksmith arrives with the right extractors and a plan.

The call
The key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click. The bow is still between your fingers. The rest of the blade is sitting inside the deadbolt, and the door is locked.

How the visit goes

Technician kneeling with a yellow cordless drill at the latch plate of a black door, a tool bag on the porch.
  1. Scene 1

    Locked or unlocked right now

Whether the bolt is thrown changes the order of work. If the door is locked, extraction is the first half and getting you inside is the second; the locksmith plans both so the door is opened with the least fuss once the keyway is clear. If the key broke while you were locking up and the door is open, the priority reverses: the fragment comes out and the door is made secure before anything else is discussed, so you can leave when you need to. On a vehicle the same question applies to the door and, separately, to whether the ignition turns.

  2. Scene 2

When the piece is standing proud

A fragment that shows above the cylinder face looks like the easy case, and it is, provided nobody pushes on it. The locksmith grips it with fine-jawed extractor pliers or needle-point tweezers made for the purpose, steadies the cylinder with the other hand, and pulls straight out along the line of the keyway. If it resists, the plug is checked for rest position rather than the pull being increased, because a piece forced against lifted pins can bend them. A trace of dry lubricant at the keyway entrance eases a tight fit. The piece comes out whole, and the lock is ready to test.

  3. Scene 3

A lock that turns like it should

The visit closes with the lock proving itself. The new key goes in fully, turns through its full travel and comes out without a catch, from both sides, first with the door swung open, then with it shut against the strike. The bolt is watched seating fully in its pocket. You are shown the fragment that came out and told what condition the cylinder was in. Anything the locksmith noticed, a strike screw backing out or a hinge that has dropped, is pointed out so it is not a surprise later. The door is locked with your own new key as the last act of the visit.

What shapes the quoteLawrence Heights Locksmith Services

Whether the plug turned before the break
A key that snapped mid-turn leaves the plug rotated and the pins holding the fragment. Easing the plug back to rest before extraction is an extra step in the work.
Weather on the day
A cylinder that is frozen or iced has to be thawed and dried before extraction can begin, so a call during a deep freeze carries that patient extra time.
How the new key is made
Cutting from a key code or a crisp spare, decoding the two halves with a gauge, or cutting a restricted blank from system records each take different time and stock.

Straight answers

Does the glue trick work?

It is a well-known idea and a poor one. A drop of adhesive on the other half rarely bonds to a piece of brass sitting in a tight keyway, and what it does bond to is the cylinder, the pins and the face of the lock. That film then has to be dissolved before proper extractors can slide in. Keep the halves apart and dry.

What happens if the piece cannot be removed?

It is rare, and it is discussed before anything changes. A glued, jammed or corroded-in fragment can usually still be reached by taking the cylinder off the door and working the plug out from the back. If even that fails, the cylinder is drilled where plug meets housing, sacrificed and replaced on the spot with new keys cut, so the door locks normally by the time the locksmith leaves.

My key has a chip in it. Does that survive the break?

Usually yes. The transponder chip and the remote electronics live in the plastic head, and the head is the part that stays in your hand when the blade snaps. Once the blade is extracted, a new blade of the right profile is cut and fitted to the old head, so the vehicle continues to recognize the chip without reprogramming. Only a cracked or soaked head needs the electronics moved to a new shell.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.
